New York State STAR Program: 2023 Benefits & Eligibility

Residents of New York State can now rejoice as all STAR checks have been distributed. Homeowners who meet the eligibility requirements will receive their STAR benefits soon. The STAR program is designed to provide relief on homeowner's school tax bills. In 2023, the average check amounted to $778 for Basic STAR recipients and $1,407 for those qualifying for Enhanced STAR.

For those seeking to benefit from the STAR program, registration is essential. Homeowners have the option to sign up online or via phone. Without enrollment, a STAR check will not be issued. Familiarity with the differences between these two checks is crucial. The Basic STAR exemption is accessible to homeowners with a household income under $250,000 irrespective of age, providing relief across the board.

Enhanced STAR, however, offers greater benefits to seniors who meet specific standards. Senior homeowners, aged 65 or older by December 31, 2024, who own and occupy their property as the primary residence, can qualify if their income does not exceed $93,200. This income threshold accounts for all property owners and any spouses residing in the home.

Income eligibility for the Enhanced STAR exemption can be determined from 2022 tax returns, using the federal adjusted gross income and excluding the taxable part of IRA distributions. Checking eligibility or current STAR benefits can be easily done through the New York State website or local town offices.
