Blue Jays Place Andrés Giménez on IL, Roster Adjustments Made

Toronto – The Toronto Blue Jays have placed second baseman Andrés Giménez on the 10-day injured list due to a left ankle sprain. The move, announced Sunday, follows Giménez’s departure from Toronto’s 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday. The injury occurred when Giménez attempted to cover second base during a steal against the New York Yankees on Wednesday, resulting in a tweak to his ankle. Consequently, he sat out Thursday’s game as the Blue Jays completed a four-game sweep of the Yankees. To accommodate Giménez’s absence, the Blue Jays have made several roster adjustments. The team retroactively placed right-hander Ryan Burr on the IL from the 60-day injured list, allowing him to return to action after battling a right shoulder issue. Burr’s recovery involved rehabilitation with Triple-A Buffalo, where he showcased impressive form, striking out 17 batters in 12 1/3 innings across 11 games and recording a 3.65 ERA.

Furthermore, outfielder Joey Loperfido was recalled from Triple-A, joining the lineup as the Blue Jays’ eighth batter in right field. Loperfido's strong performance in Triple-A this season has been notable, with a batting average of .278, nine home runs, and 36 RBIs. Conversely, Lazaro Estrada was optioned back to Triple-A, while outfielder Will Robertson was designated for assignment, effectively removing him from the major league roster. Robertson, who made his MLB debut last month, has appeared in three games, registering one hit and one RBI.

These roster moves highlight the Blue Jays’ ongoing adjustments as they compete for the top spot in the American League East. The team's focus remains on maximizing their roster depth and utilizing the talents of players developing within the organization. With Giménez sidelined, the Blue Jays will need to rely on the contributions of players like Loperfido and Burr to maintain their momentum. The strategic decisions made by the coaching staff will be crucial in navigating the challenges of a competitive AL East division. The Blue Jays’ success hinges on their ability to adapt and capitalize on opportunities presented by injuries and roster changes. This ongoing process underscores the importance of player development and the dynamic nature of professional baseball.
