Milwaukee Brewers pitchers Brandon Woodruff and Nestor Cortes are nearing a return from lengthy injury stints, offering fans a glimmer of hope as they progress through rehabilitation. Both pitchers participated in simulated games on Monday, marking significant steps toward their potential return to the major leagues. Woodruff, who last pitched in a major league game in September 2023, threw 60 pitches during his simulated game, demonstrating a readiness to compete. His recovery journey hasn't been without challenges, initially stemming from tendinitis in his right ankle, followed by a concerning injury when a 108-mph line drive struck his right elbow during a Triple-A Nashville outing in June. This resulted in a bruise that significantly delayed his return. Despite these setbacks, Woodruff remains optimistic, stating, "I've always been a guy, when I'm ready, I'm ready."
He acknowledges the difficult nature of the recovery process, particularly during road trips, emphasizing the importance of family support. Woodruff’s family, including his daughter Kyler (turning 5 in August) and son Bowen (born last July), plays a crucial role in his motivation and well-being. Cortes, recovering from a flexor strain in his throwing elbow, also showcased progress with 22-23 pitches in his simulated game and an additional 25-30 pitches during a bullpen session. Cortes aims to begin a rehabilitation appearance in early July, anticipating a return shortly after the All-Star break. He believes this represents the safest and quickest path back to the majors.
The 30-year-old left-hander’s wife, Alondra, gave birth to Nestor Cortes III in April, providing invaluable support. While Woodruff and Cortes focus on their recoveries, the Brewers are also monitoring the situation of minor league prospect Brock Wilken. Wilken, the 18th overall pick out of Wake Forest, sustained a dislocated patellar tendon during a celebration of Biloxi’s Southern League South Division first-half title. The 23-year-old infielder was hitting .230 with a .392 on-base percentage, 18 home runs, 41 RBIs, and 57 walks in 65 games with Biloxi before the injury.
The team is awaiting a second opinion regarding Wilken’s injury. The progress of Woodruff and Cortes provides a positive outlook for the Brewers, and the team's attention is also directed toward the recovery of their promising young prospect, Brock Wilken. These developments highlight the team’s commitment to player health and the potential for key contributors to return to form.
