If you’re reading this, I know you’re tired of corruption and chaos at City Hall. It’s not too much to ask to have a mayor who follows the law and tells the truth. But thanks to Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo, every week there’s a headline uncovering a new scandal. They’re both running for mayor because of their own problems. I’m running to solve yours. The affordability crisis is crushing working families, especially the sky-high cost of housing. Everyone is talking about affordable housing, but I have the experience and record of results to back it up. Before entering government, I served as executive director of the Fifth Avenue Committee, renovating abandoned buildings and vacant lots into affordable homes, and helping thousands of New Yorkers find good jobs. In the City Council, I fought to improve lives and delivered real results — raising workers’ wages, installing air conditioning in every overheated public school classroom, and spearheading the Gowanus rezoning to create thousands of affordable new homes and renovate the public housing nearby. On day one as mayor, I’ll declare a housing “state of emergency,” so we can build 500,000 new homes — including new neighborhoods on underused land, like four of our 12 city-owned golf courses — protect tenants from eviction, and create new paths to homeownership for working families. As city comptroller, I’ve held Mayor Adams accountable and delivered real results. I’ve saved taxpayers $2.5 billion. I rejected Adams’ shady asylum seeker contracts and his attempt to push our retirees into a privatized Medicare Advantage scheme. I’ve invested wisely and diversified our pension portfolio, while diverting from fossil fuels and investing in affordable housing — so our pension funds have grown to record levels. When Elon Musk and Donald Trump stole $80 million from our city, I uncovered it and forced the Law Department to sue to get our money back. I’ve never backed down from a fight with bullies or powerful interests — and I never will. I know what it takes to manage public agencies, build first-rate teams, and make our neighborhoods safer, because I’ve done it. I’ll keep Jessica Tisch as NYPD commissioner, and work closely with her to recruit, retain, and support officers to get illegal guns off the street and prevent violent crimes. I’ve got plans to address retail theft and moped chaos, to trash the rats, and to invest in our parks, libraries, and cultural organizations, to make our neighborhoods more livable. My top commitment? Ending street homelessness for people with serious mental illness. With a proven “Housing First” approach, we’ll provide stable housing and services to the 3,000 New Yorkers currently cycling between our streets, subways, hospitals, and jails. It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do.
Some candidates in this race have exciting ideas, but no experience managing city agencies to deliver on them. One candidate, Cuomo, was handed the keys to New York State, but resigned in disgrace in a blaze of corruption, mismanagement, and abuse. He has taken no responsibility for his actions, and learned absolutely nothing. Now, he’s even forcing taxpayers to spend $60 million on his own legal bills. He does not deserve your trust. I’m the only candidate in this race who combines the progressive values to make New York City more affordable and stand up to Trump, a track record of public integrity to sweep away the corruption of Adams and Cuomo, and the proven leadership and management experience to deliver on my promises. In 1995, my wife Meg and I were lucky enough to buy a co-op in Brooklyn for $125,000, and that made it possible for us to raise our kids here. From city public schools, to Little League games in Prospect Park, to last-day-of-school trips to Coney Island, this city has opened up worlds for us. I’m running for mayor because I want every family to have the chance to build a life like that here: To raise their family in a home they can afford. To feel safe on their block and their subway stop. To have a great school for their kid, that makes it possible to dream big dreams, and then make them real. In a safer, more affordable, and scandal-free city. Let’s bring integrity and competence back to City Hall. Lander, the city comptroller and former City Council member.
