The Cleveland Browns opened the season against the Dallas Cowboys in the worst possible way with a 33-17 loss. Nothing went well for the Browns, who must seriously regroup before taking on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2. Here is a list of the problems.
Quarterback: Deshaun Watson was on the ground more often than he should have been, and he threw two interceptions. The Cowboys had 5 sacks and 22 pressures on him. Watson is coming off of season-ending shoulder surgery. With an injured offensive line, especially on his blind side, his protection against Micah Parsons and the Dallas defense was not great. Watson looked rusty at best.
Offense: The Browns' offense struggled significantly. At halftime, they had only 54 yards, were 0/6 on third down, managed just one first down, and held possession for only 9:54 minutes. They also had one turnover and an excessive number of penalties. It was a performance that could be described as pathetic, awful, and embarrassing.
Injuries: Key offensive playmakers David Njoku and Jerry Jeudy were banged up in the game. The significance of these injuries is yet to be known, but they could impact the Browns' offensive capabilities moving forward.
Defense: The Browns' defense was ineffective at stopping both the run and passing games of the Cowboys. Denzel Ward nearly had several momentum-changing interceptions but couldn't secure them. The Cowboys’ game plan effectively neutralized Myles Garrett, preventing him from dominating the line of scrimmage.
Special Teams: Corey Bojorquez continually punted the ball to Cowboys returner KaVontae Turpin, who capitalized with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown. This was a huge play that contributed to the Cowboys' sizable lead.
Week 1 does not define a season. The Browns have a talented roster, but they have a lot of work to do before Week 2 in Jacksonville.
