Chris Eubank Jr vs. Conor Benn Rematch: Ben Shalom Calls for Higher Weight Limit

Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn should agree to a rematch at a higher weight limit, according to Ben Shalom, the promoter of the event. Following their thrilling clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April, where Eubank secured a unanimous decision victory, discussions are now focused on ensuring a safer and more commercially viable second fight. Eubank narrowly missed the 160lb weight limit at the weigh-in, and the subsequent rehydration clause allowed him to compete up to 170lbs on fight day. Ben Shalom, Eubank’s promoter, believes addressing the weight issue is paramount. "The rehydration clause is probably less dangerous than the 160lbs limit now at this stage in his career," Shalom explained to Sky Sports. "That’s where probably it’s the biggest challenge. As the organizers of the event, everyone has to be sensible as to how we approach the second fight. That was the one downer on the event, all the talk about the weight. And so I’m sure everyone will be sensible."

Shalom emphasizes the need for a mutually agreeable weight limit to alleviate public concerns and maximize the financial potential for both fighters, while prioritizing their safety. He believes that a higher weight limit would reduce the strain on Eubank’s body and create a more competitive and engaging rematch. "I think that would alleviate a lot of people’s concerns about the fight," Shalom stated. "I think everyone involved just wants the fighters to make as much money as they can but get out of the ring safely. That’s what boxing’s about and so anything that can increase the chances of that happening should be focused on."

Furthermore, Shalom is open to staging the rematch at a different venue, suggesting locations like Wembley or the Principality Stadium, highlighting the potential for a massive event that could fill multiple stadiums. "It was very competitive. I think Conor Benn proved himself at the weight that night. He was a serious competitor. He came in big and he looked comfortable," Shalom added. "I think that’s why in the rematch there should be less talk about the weight."

Shalom acknowledges the significant impact the first fight had on the sport, fueling the desire for a repeat event. "Wouldn’t it be amazing to do it again because of the impact it had on the sport in this country but everyone wants it to be as safe as possible for the fighters."

The promoter’s vision is for a blockbuster event, regardless of the location, capable of generating substantial revenue and excitement. "We saw a very good fight, a very competitive fight but there were concerns around the challenge on Chris’ body. So no one wants to see that. We believe and we hope there’ll be discussions around that before we make the rematch."

The potential for a significant pay-day for both fighters and the overall spectacle of a high-profile boxing match are key considerations driving Shalom’s proposals. He believes that a higher weight limit would allow for a more exciting and competitive fight, while also minimizing the risk of injury to Eubank. The success of the initial bout, which captivated audiences and generated considerable buzz, underscores the opportunity for a follow-up event of similar magnitude.

Ultimately, Shalom is committed to facilitating a rematch that is both commercially viable and safe for the athletes involved, reflecting the core values of the sport of boxing.
