The Orlando Magic made a significant statement in their final preseason face-off with the Philadelphia 76ers, securing a 114-99 home victory after a lengthy break due to Hurricane Milton. With U.S. Olympic track star Noah Lyles observing from the sidelines at Kia Center, the spotlight was squarely on first-time NBA All-Star Paolo Banchero. He delivered an impressive performance with 21 points and 6 rebounds in just 24 minutes. Orlando demonstrated resilience and skill despite Philadelphia missing key players, including league MVP Joel Embiid and veteran Paul George, both sidelined by knee issues, and rookie Jared McCain due to a chest condition.
The Magic's poise was evident as they flexed their defensive capabilities, ending their preseason on a high note against the injury-afflicted 76ers. As they prepare to take on the Miami Heat for their regular season opener, Orlando aims to translate their preseason success into competitive results. Coach Jamahl Mosley emphasized conditioning, allowing extended playtime for his groups during the game. The starting lineup, consisting of Banchero, Jalen Suggs, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Franz Wagner, and Wendell Carter Jr., showcased their prowess on the court.
In the first quarter, the starters logged significant minutes together, with Banchero, Suggs, and Wagner playing the entire period. Although Mosley intended for the starters to play 18-20 minutes, most exceeded this due to an extensive start. Caldwell-Pope, despite limited court time, made his presence felt by hitting a crucial three-pointer and snatching a steal, contributing to an 8-0 run that secured Orlando's first lead.
Suggs, taking charge of the offense, struggled with three-point shots but demonstrated his effectiveness in driving to the basket. He capitalized on free throws, contributing 12 points and 7 assists. Carter made a strong return from an ankle sprain earlier in the preseason, scoring 10 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. The initial group faced challenges from the three-point line.
However, the Magic's second unit shone, particularly in the second quarter. Led by second-year pro Jett Howard, who scored three consecutive three-pointers, the bench players excelled, shooting 7 of 8 from beyond the arc. Gary Harris, Jonathan Isaac, Anthony Black, and Moe Wagner all contributed to spreading the floor effectively. Black, taking on playmaking responsibilities, dished out 5 assists in the first half, adding up to a total of 8 assists and 8 points.
Tristan da Silva debuted during the third quarter, joining Black, Howard, Cole Anthony, and Goga Bitadze. Although da Silva missed a couple of three-point attempts, he still managed to score 6 points and secure 4 rebounds in his 11-minute play.
The Magic also partnered with AdventHealth for their "Pink in the Paint Night" event, raising awareness for breast cancer. The initiative involved donating game tickets to survivors and fundraising for AdventHealth's Breast Care Fund. TELETIES, a hair tie company, contributed by giving away breast cancer awareness packs to the first 7,000 fans. The evening honored Central Florida breast cancer survivors, adding a significant social impact to the event.
Looking ahead, the Magic will face the Miami Heat on Wednesday at 7:30 PM. The game will be broadcasted on Bally Sports Florida and FanDuel Sports Network. For more information, Jason Beede can be contacted via email at [email protected].
