College football is seeing a significant shift in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) with Villanova set to join Lafayette, Lehigh, and Lehigh in the Patriot League beginning in the 2026 season. This move represents a considerable expansion for the Patriot League, bringing its football membership to 10 institutions and solidifying its position within the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The announcement, released Thursday morning by the Patriot League, highlights Villanova’s consistent performance as a premier FCS football program, alongside its dedication to academic achievement. The addition builds upon recent moves by Richmond and William & Mary, marking a substantial reshaping of the competitive landscape. Patriot League Commissioner Jennifer Heppel emphasized the significance of Villanova’s arrival, stating, "The addition of Villanova as our 10th football member represents a significant and exciting moment for the Patriot League."
Villanova’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, Eric Roedl, echoed this sentiment, expressing respect for the league’s institutions and a commitment to competing at the highest levels of FCS football. Colgate University President and Chair of the Patriot League Council of Presidents Brian W. Casey lauded the move, noting Villanova’s tradition of athletic excellence aligns perfectly with the League’s core values. The expansion comes after a period where the Patriot League had never exceeded eight football-playing institutions (2001-03), with Georgetown being the last program to join in 2001. Looking back, the league has seen a remarkable rise in competitive strength, with eight programs ranking in the Stats Perform and AFCA FCS Coaches Poll since 2015. During this period, the 10 programs have combined to win 17 FCS playoff games, advancing to the quarterfinals eight times. The Patriot League remains committed to maintaining a full conference schedule, determining the League champion and securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I FCS tournament.
Lehigh, the defending Patriot League champion, will host Richmond in the Spiders’ inaugural Patriot League game on August 30 at Goodman Stadium. Lafayette, the 2023 league champion, begins its season with a nonleague contest at Bowling Green on Aug. 28. Villanova football coach Mark Ferrante expressed excitement about joining a conference with shared values, emphasizing the strategic geographic alignment and commitment to excellence both on and off the field. This expansion isn’t just about adding a team; it’s about strengthening the entire league and creating a more dynamic and competitive environment for years to come. The Patriot League’s future looks bright with this significant addition, poised to continue its legacy of success and academic distinction.
