Empowerment and Quality Living at Vineyards: Know Your Rights

As residents of senior communities, knowing your rights is crucial to maintaining a high quality of life. The federal Nursing Home Reform law ensures residents are fully informed about their care and gives them the freedom to choose their own schedules for meals and activities. Coleta and Robert Walker, who moved into Vineyards California Armenian Home over a year ago, decided early on to downsize and enjoy the amenities of senior community living when they realized the upkeep of their home was too demanding without family nearby.

Since their move, they've experienced increased social engagement, fostering friendships and enjoying activities like taking walks and playing mahjong. The Vineyards is a non-profit community that supports all phases of senior living, whether independent or needing skilled nursing assistance, all nestled within a sprawling 40-acre property. Its mission is to provide compassionate care with a focus on choice, offering residents options for varied activities and dining experiences. According to Dennis Bacopulos, the CEO, it's about offering residents the freedom to choose their lifestyle.

Susan Bussean, the program manager at the Fresno-Madera Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, emphasizes that federal laws and state regulations preserve the human and civil rights of those moving to senior communities. Residents retain the right to select their physician, enjoy weekends away, celebrate holidays at home, and manage their own finances. Beyond these personal freedoms, they also maintain their right to vote within the community, which even serves as a voting station.

The role of the ombudsman, which Bussean and her team fulfill, is vital. They visit long-term care facilities monthly, advocating for resident rights through education and ensuring compliance with regulations. Bacopulos stresses the importance of an unrestricted, inclusive environment that supports a rich and active lifestyle. Knowing these rights empowers residents to embrace their autonomy, reinforcing their freedom to enjoy the best possible quality of life.
