Shohei Ohtani Hits 46th Home Run in Record-Heat Victory Over Guardians

LOS ANGELES -- Shohei Ohtani hit his 46th home run of the season, tying his career high, as the Los Angeles Dodgers triumphed 4-0 over the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday in record-tying heat. The first-pitch temperature soared to 103 degrees, matching the hottest in Dodger Stadium's history. Ohtani blasted a 450-foot solo shot down the right-field line off Tanner Bibee in the fifth inning, which was reviewed to ensure it was fair. Ohtani now has 22 home runs of at least 450 feet since 2021, five more than any other player during this period. He also hit 46 home runs in 2021 during his unanimous AL MVP season for the Los Angeles Angels.

The Japanese star is aiming to achieve a historic 50-50 season with 46 stolen bases already to his name. He's one home run short of equalling Cody Bellinger's 2019 record for the third-most homers in a season in Dodgers history. In Sunday's game, Ohtani went 2-for-4, though he was picked off first base in the third inning. With record heat to contend with, Dodger Stadium's temperature was also 103 degrees during the first pitch of Game 1 of the 2017 World Series against Houston. In response to the heat, the Dodgers offered a free bottle of water to all fans. Jack Flaherty excelled on the mound, pitching 7 1/3 innings, striking out six batters, and allowing just four hits.

Flaherty, a Southern California native, has achieved a 5-1 record since being traded from Detroit. Max Muncy added to the Dodgers' runs with a homer in the eighth inning, marking his 12th of an injury-shortened season. On the injury front, Dodgers pitcher Gavin Stone, who is dealing with right shoulder inflammation, won't throw for 10 days and will then reassess his condition. His availability for the postseason remains uncertain with only 19 games left. Insights provided by ESPN Research and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
