Taylor Swift’s twelfth album, *The Life of a Showgirl*, has finally arrived, and it’s already generating buzz thanks to a highly anticipated collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter. Carpenter, the sole guest vocalist on the LP, joins Swift on the title track, “The Life of a Showgirl,” a mid-tempo pop anthem that tells the story of a woman named Kitty, who ‘made her money being pretty and witty.’ The song captures Kitty’s perspective as she navigates a glamorous but demanding world, crooning, “Hey, thank you for the lovely bouquet/ You’re sweeter than a peach/ But you don’t know the life of a showgirl, babe/ And you’re never ever gonna.” As the track builds to its conclusion, Swift delivers a heartfelt closing line, “Give it up for the band, the dancers, and, of course, Sabrina.” Carpenter responds with a sweet, “I love you, Taylor!” This collaboration marks Swift and Carpenter’s first official song together, a moment solidified when Swift officially announced the album’s set list in August. Carpenter’s immediate reaction, shared on Instagram, was a playful, “I know someone who’s freaking out and it’s me.”
For Sabrina Carpenter, a feature on Swift’s 12th album represents a monumental achievement, particularly given her longstanding admiration for the superstar. As she told Rolling Stone last year, “I hold her to such a different echelon,” acknowledging the vast difference in their careers and trajectories. Carpenter’s early musical journey began around 2009, when she began uploading passionate YouTube covers of popular songs, notably a rendition of Swift’s “Picture to Burn.” This shared musical passion ultimately led to their collaboration on the Eras Tour stage in the fall of 2024, during a surprise performance in New Orleans. During this unforgettable moment, they played a dynamic mashup of Carpenter’s hit “Espresso” alongside Swift’s “Is It Over Now?” and another Short ‘n Sweet track, “Please Please Please.”
Following the performance, Swift publicly praised Carpenter’s authenticity, stating, “She’s as real as they come and I’m so thankful she did that for us,” and shared her appreciation on Instagram. The release of *The Life of a Showgirl* was celebrated by Swift in an Instagram post on Friday, highlighting the convergence of creative lives and experiences: “Tonight all these lives converge here/ The mosaics of laughter and cocktails of tears/ Where fraternal souls sing identical things/ And it’s beautiful/ It’s rapturous/ It is frightening.” Swift further expressed her immense pride, adding, “I can’t tell you how proud I am to share this with you, an album that just feels so right. A forever thank you goes out to my mentors and friends Max and Shellback for helping me paint this self portrait.”
The singer also teased fans with a promise of behind-the-scenes glimpses, hinting, “If you thought the big show was wild, perhaps you should come and take a look behind the curtain… The Life of a Showgirl is out now.”
