Milwaukee – The Milwaukee Brewers’ playoff hopes hinge on the immediate status of center fielder Jackson Chourio following an inconclusive MRI on his right hamstring. Manager Pat Murphy confirmed that Chourio’s availability for Game 2 of the NLDS against the Chicago Cubs on Monday is uncertain, stemming from an injury sustained during Game 1 on Saturday. Chourio, a 21-year-old prospect, impressively hit an infield single in the bottom of the second inning before exiting the game due to the hamstring issue – the same one he suffered earlier in July while playing against the Cubs. This latest setback casts a shadow over his potential contribution to the Brewers’ postseason push. Murphy’s statement on Sunday afternoon offered a cautious outlook: "I can’t give you a definitive, but I know that we’re going to test some things today." He acknowledged the hamstring’s prior injury history, emphasizing that while the MRI ruled out a serious strain, it hasn’t cleared Chourio for full participation. The Brewers are navigating a delicate situation, balancing the need to assess Chourio’s condition with the urgency of the playoff series. Isaac Collins is expected to fill Chourio’s role in the lineup if the center fielder is unable to play, highlighting the team’s contingency plans. The news comes as Aaron Ashby is slated to start Game 2 for the Brewers, though his performance after throwing 11⁄3 innings on Saturday raises questions about his potential length in the outing. Ashby’s primary goal is to neutralize Cubs leadoff man Michael Busch, a left-handed hitter who homered to start Game 1. Murphy indicated that Ashby could pitch as long as desired. Quinn Priester is anticipated to handle the bulk of the innings following Ashby’s start.
The Cubs, meanwhile, are countering with left-handed pitcher Shotta Imanaga, who pitched in Game 2 of the wild-card round against the San Diego Padres. Imanaga’s career record against the Brewers includes a 5.73 ERA, with three starts this season. He described the Brewers’ offense as a challenging opponent, noting the hitters’ preparedness. Imanaga’s strategy focuses on methodical approach, one out at a time. Murphy addressed Imanaga’s pitching style, noting his heater plays up, appearing as a 95-96 mph pitch. The Brewers secured a decisive victory in Game 1, winning 9-3. This outcome underscores the significance of Chourio’s status and the impact it could have on Milwaukee’s chances in the NLDS.
